Managing Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp Psoriasis causes the scalp cells to grow quickly causing red rashes and a build-up of silvery white scales, commonly called plaque. While psoriasis cannot be totally cured and often recurs there are ways to manage it and avoid flare ups.
• Avoid things that trigger flare ups, these include; smoking, alcohol, stress, certain medications and food high in allergens.
• Try not to scratch and rub. As hard as it may seem, avoid scratching and rubbing at all cost. This will only injure the scalp further and even result to noticeable hair loss.
• The best way to stop the itching is to follow your dermatologist’s instructions and treat the psoriasis. Mild to moderate scalp psoriasis can be treated with steroid creams, ointments and tar shampoos.
• Use a shampoo and scale softener prescribed by your dermatologist. This usually comes with salicylic acid that soften thick, stubborn patches. Remove the scales gently, picking on them and rubbing vigorously will only cause the psoriasis to worsen.
• Use natural remedies including moderate sun exposure, tea tree oil, aloe and oatmeal baths to help soothe the skin and scalp.
• Eat a healthy balanced diet, practice relaxation exercises to relieve stress and continue to engage in social activities. Preventing stress and depression also helps control flare ups.
